Acclaimed director Francis Ford Coppola and his wife, Eleanor, first opened a winery in Napa Valley when they purchased the former Inglenook property, complete with vineyards. He restored the house, produced grapes, and the name Coppola became as famous for wine as it did movies. The story, however, did not end in Rutherford; it began in Sonoma.
In 2006, Coppola’s winery was renamed Rubicon Estate and he began his quest to build something much more than a winery, though his wines were already critically acclaimed. He built an attraction in Sonoma’s Geyserville, and it is one for the entire family.
When you enter the big gates in front of the Francis Ford Coppola Winery, you aren’t quite sure if you are going into a movie set or an Italian castle. He has called it “a wine wonderland” and that is a good description. Unlike most wineries, this one is built with the entire family in mind. It’s a place where you can actually spend the day, with excitement for kids of all ages to enjoy.
Outside of the winery is a swimming pool, café and changing “cabines,” which include pool passes and towels when you rent them. Chairs are around the pool for relaxing and daily swimming passes are limited so it doesn’t get too crowded. There are also four full-size bocce ball courts outside, and special events and concerts often take place there in the spring and summer.
Inside of the Francis Ford Coppola Winery you will find just as much fun for the entire family. The Movie gallery contains some of Coppola’s movie memorabilia, such as Don Corleone’s desk from The Godfather and the convertible from Tucker, as well as actual awards, from Oscars to Golden Globes. A store sells winery labeled products and some of the director’s favorite food items.
You will find Rustic Restaurant inside of the winery. It serves “Francis’ Favorites,” which include Marrakesh Lamb and Braciole with Rigatoni in Meat Ragu. Seating for the restaurant is inside or out. This is also the only winery in the valley with a full-service bar if you’d rather have cocktails than wine.
Despite all the pomp and circumstance at Francis Ford Coppola’s. Plenty of effort is still put into the wine. Before you leave, head down to the Tasting Bar for some Director’s Cut Cabernet – you won’t be sorry.
